New revised edition of Transgender Emergence

Celebrating the upcoming release of a new edition of Transgender Emergence!

A revised and updated version of the groundbreaking book Transgender Emergence is coming soon.

Cover of Transgender EmergenceTransgender Emergence has provided thousands of mental health clinicians with detailed guidance for working with transgender individuals and families for over two decades. As a social worker, family therapist, and sex therapy supervisor, author Arlene Istar Lev, LCSW-R, CASAC, CSTS, now brings nearly 40 years of experience working with transgender and nonbinary individuals and their families to the revision of this text.

The original text of Transgender Emergence grew out of Lev’s extensive experience working with transgender clients and her awareness of the lack of comprehensive resources for therapists serving this population. The book was groundbreaking as the first clinical (social work) book to challenge the pathologization of transgender identities and to suggest a trans affirmative approach to working with trans people and their families. The first edition won the APA Division 44 Distinguished Book Award and was named a “Title of Exceptional Merit” by the Society for Sex Therapy and Research.

Two decades after the original publication, there have been many strides forward in developing a trans-affirmative approach to mental health care and support for trans/nonbinary people in their health care needs. In recent years, there also have been reactionary strides backward which have created new challenges and threats for trans individuals and their loved ones. The new, revised edition of Transgender Emergence will offer updated information and guidelines for clinicians working with these populations in these troubled times.
